Seminar “Stakeholders as important actors in Marine Strategy Framework Directive implementation: from decision makers to general public”

On 15-16 November, 2012, about 70 participants from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Finland, Germany and Ireland took part in the seminar “Stakeholders as important actors in Marine Strategy Framework Directive implementation: from decision makers to general public” organised within the MARMONI Project. The seminar gathered stakeholders from various sectors, both environmental and non-environmental.

The aim of the seminar was to introduce a wider stakeholder audience with the MSFD. The participants obtained knowledge about its basic principle – the Ecosystem Based Approach, exchanged information about the first steps of the implementation of the MSFD in countries around the Baltic Sea – preparation of the Initial Assessment and setting targets for the Good Environmental Status to be achieved by 2020.

The participants also found out, which institutions are responsible for the implementation of the Directive in different countries, as well as what is the role of two international organisations – ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) and HELCOM (Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission) in MSFD processes.

The stakeholders were glad to hear from the representative of ICES that fisheries in the Baltic Sea, in general, follow the requirements of the Directive. Basic principles of the Maritime Spatial Planning and example of mapping the marine environment for spatial management were introduced.

At the end, the experience of the PISCES project (http://www.projectpisces.eu) on involving various stakeholders in the implementation of the MSFD was presented.

The agenda and presentations of the seminar are available below.
